PSS Type A Shaft Seal, PYI Inc Dripless Marine Mechanical Face Seal

The PSS Type A Shaft Seal by PYI Inc is a world-leading dripless mechanical face seal for marine shaft applications. It is installed as standard equipment by many boat builders and is widely recognized as the premiere retrofit solution to eliminate bilge water and prevent wear to the propeller shaft. The seal works by forming a sealing surface between a rotating stainless steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange; the carbon flange is over-bored to float around the shaft and compensate for misalignment and vibration. The stainless steel rotor compresses the bellows and is secured to the shaft with set-screws while two O-rings recessed in the rotor rotate with the shaft and do not experience wear. The PSS is certified by ABS, BV (Bureau Veritas) and RINA and is available for shafts ranging from 3/4" (20mm) to 6" (150mm). As with any below-waterline rubber component, the bellows should be inspected regularly for wear, aging or chemical deterioration; PYI suggests bellows replacement at six-year intervals and notes bellows may deteriorate faster in environments with sulfuric acid vapor or an ozonater. Maintenance kits include the parts needed for service: one bellow, two O-rings, five set screws, four hose clamps and an allen key.
